ACA – Adult Child of Alcoholics & Dysfunctional Families

I was conceived by my father who was an alcoholic and my early years pretty dysfunctional.  It is only in the past 6 years that I’ve woken up to the fact that I’m an ACA or Adult Child of an Alcoholic (only realized in my late 60’s).

I attended some meetings in Totnes before lockdown and in January 2023 went up near Edinburgh for an ACA Retreat which was amaZing.  Again, as in the BS Survivor Workshop weekends, I heard my story told over and over and over again.  So encouraging and comforting.

I’m now ready to pursue the ACA approach as I loved being heard and hearing others without judgement.  There are Meetings around the country (and the world) though none in Cornwall, yet!

If anyone’s interested, there is some good info. on the UK website.  Workbooks on learning to parent oneself (yes!) included.  So lots of overlap with being a BS survivor for me. https://www.adultchildrenofalcoholics.co.uk

There’s also a USA website and a good private FB page based on America.

And I love the “Recovery Community” as I have found so much open-ness and celebration amidst others also in distress.
